Wisconsin 4H is hosting a Virtual Arts Festival available to students from Ozaukee, Fond Du Lac, or Washington County that art teachers at HUHS have urged students to submit their artwork to the free contest.

Art students at HUHS get the chance every year to participate in a contest called the Scholastic Art and Writing Competition that the teachers promote to their students. However, this year, another competition will be available online for any students interested. The Virtual Arts Festival is being held during most of the month of February with a deadline of Feb. 15. The subject of the festival is “Nature in Art.”

The festival will focus on two-dimensional art and will accept works of drawing, painting, photography, and any other two-dimensional media. This work will be judged virtually, and the student will meet virtually with a judge to receive feedback.

“I encourage any and all students who are interested in Art to be a part of as many Art shows and competitions as possible,” art teacher Derek Malcore said. “It is a great way to get your work out there and visible in the public eye as well as meeting and networking with like minded people and artists.”

Art teacher Dawn Bloomer especially encourages the AP art students to participate in this event, as that is a group of students that have participated in many other art competitions in the past. Bloomer has even organized art exhibits for her students’ work in the past.

“We have exhibited at US Bank, Paubela’s Kitchen and at an empty storefront on Main Street,” Bloomer said. “Last year we were unable to do so due to Covid, so this is a great opportunity.”

The virtual aspect of the festival is what makes it different from festivals in the past. Malcore is thankful that it was only made virtual and was not simply cancelled.

“It would obviously be great to meet with other artists and see their work in person, but this year, we just need to focus on any lemonade we can squeeze from all the lemons being thrown our way,” Malcore said.
