Clubs at HUHS are choosing to start holding virtual meetings and events as a way to keep students safe and prevent any further risk of the group contracting COVID-19.
Events that took place last year after the school shut down were cancelled for most clubs.
Groups like the Student Council have been forced to make some changes to the way they conduct their meetings and events this year. Third year Student Council member Alayna Pusch said a lot has changed since last year in terms of both meetings and events so far.
“We had in person meetings for two weeks and then now we changed it to virtual and so the in person meetings we always had the option to do virtual too but now everyone is just virtual to make sure everyone is safe,” Pusch said.
Clubs have also seen changes in the way they are forced to hold their events. The Student Council was forced to make this year’s talent show virtual as a way to prevent large group gatherings. FBLA Vice President Jadyn Bierman said they currently have little to no details on how their events will be held this year.
“We really aren’t sure.” Bierman said. “With Stephanie Gavin as our Region Vice President, HUHS would have been hosting the regional conference this year. However, this has been moved to an online competition.”
Other clubs such as the Math Club have experienced these changes as well. FBLA started doing monthly meetings online with a video a member has to watch and a google form to fill out to prove they watched the video and essentially attended the meeting. Math club member Georgia Krukar says that he Math Club is still holding in person meetings, but the seating is socially distanced and snacks are prepackaged.
“We do not have any more plans since we don’t know exactly what’s going on right now,” Krukar said.
Many clubs at HUHS are doing the same thing. Virtual meetings are becoming the standard as a way to keep students safe. Events are either being held virtually or not at all, but no clubs will be cancelled.
