H-Club’s Shamrock Shuffle five kilometer fundraiser will take place this year after being cancelled due to COVID last spring, this will be the second year in a row that this fundraiser has been affected in some way by the pandemic.
The Shamrock Shuffle is a 5k fun run or a one-mile walk/run fundraiser that all ages can participate in. Many local businesses sponsor the event and the money raised goes to some student-athletes at HUHS involved in H-Club. Some of the planning details are still to be worked out; however, H-Club advisor Kristen Helms is looking forward to hosting an in-person event.
“A 5K/10K event was successfully hosted at HUHS a few weeks ago, so I am optimistic that we will be able to hold ours,” Helms said.
There will be typical COVID precautions in place for the fundraiser such as social distancing and masks. This year, because spring sports are delayed, H-Club will be moving registration into the field house so that there can be proper social distancing. Also, masks will be required inside HUHS and at the start and end of the race.
H-Club President Caleb Much is excited to have the event after it getting cancelled the year previous.
“We are currently working on finding the best ways to keep everyone safe while having fun at this great event,” Much said.
H-Club teamed up with Logan’s Laps for Love last year holding a virtual run with their event. Logan’s Laps for Love is a 5k fundraising event that raises money for Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin. Despite the problems that arose last year, H-Club was still able to raise $8200 and give out 12 scholarships.
“Last year, H-Club members did a fantastic job securing sponsors for the event,” Helms said. The money received from sponsors was able to offset the club’s costs and allowed them to give more and greater value scholarships.
“Each year we are blessed with many local businesses offering to help sponsor this event,” Much said.
Currently, H-Club is working on finding sponsors for this year’s event. The money raised will go directly to the club’s scholarship foundation. Club members are also currently designing t-shirts and signs for the event which have the sponsor’s logos.
“Planning and organizing a fundraiser can be hectic, but each year our club and members do a great job planning, setting up, and running the event so I don’t see any real problems arising,” Much said.
H-Club member Erica Semler is excited for the opportunity to do the event this year.
“I remember doing it when I was younger so it’s cool for me coming to an event like this,” Semler said.
Semler is also hoping for good weather and good participation from the community as well.
