Homecoming is one of the most exciting times of the year in the HUHS community, however this year the Coronavirus has put a halt to the Hartford spirit including the pep rally, parade and the dance.

Every year, the student council plans out an exciting homecoming week, however this year due to all of the cancellations homecoming week is not very exciting for the students. “I wish we still had the big student section at the football game, because that is always the most fun night of the week,” year in school Alek Anderson said.

The student council that mainly plans homecoming week has come up with alternatives to keep this year's homecoming as exciting as possible.

By trying to keep homecoming week as normal as possible while still being safe student council co-president Isabella Freidel said, “ We had the window painting done down the sunway hallway, which was done by different sports and clubs who are active during the fall.”

By having these necessities still a part of homecoming week Freidl said “We are doing everything we can to make homecoming week inclusive and exciting as it’s not just an school event but the Harford community is involved as well.”

Advisor student council member Sheila Parker said some aspects of cancelling this year for homecoming were harder than others.

Parker said, “The dance is the hardest part for the student council because the dance is our only fundraiser for the year,” Parker said. “We use the proceeds to run the blood drives and all the other activities that we sponsor throughout the year.”

Along with this Parker explains that most of the events were cancelled due to COVID and the student council had to take these measures to keep the community safe from the virus.

Senior Alek Anderson, homecoming court member, said that the most upsetting event that was cancelled was the pep rally. “Those are always the most energetic and busy events and it sucks that we don’t get it for our last year of high school,” Anderson said.

As most seniors can relate with all of the events being cancelled this year it was very upsetting to hear about the cancellations but understanding.

Anderson also talks about being a part of the homecoming court by saying “It's cool to be on court, I wasn’t expecting to get on and didn’t know until the announcement over the loudspeaker, but I was excited when I heard my name.”
