The math club has been collecting shoes that will be sent to Africa to help out the people in need, but due to the pandemic they have to do it in a cautious manner.
The Community Service Officer Brook Aufdermauer has been in charge of this project. The advisors chose the fundraiser and handed it to Aufdermauer to take the lead on.
“She is responsible for communicating the collection requirements,” advisor Christine Dubnicka said. “Brook has done a great job taking the lead on this project.”
The charity involves the donations being clean and package them to be sent off to certain countries in Africa for the people and children who need them most. Despite the new problems occurring in the world, people are still experiencing problems with poverty.
“There is a lot of poverty and including the corona virus it makes everything ten times worse,” Aufdermauer said. “I think it is good that we are all coming together in hard times to make a difference.”
The math club was asking each member to provide 20 to 25 pairs of shoes and with every pair of shoe provided one or two dollars to cover the cost of cleaning and packaging. By sending these shoes to underdeveloped countries, they give the people a gift that lasts a long time.
“It is important to be doing these fundraisers especially during corona,” co-secretary of math club Georgia Krukar said. “People are struggling a lot more than usual.”
For now the math club is not allowed to take donations outside of their club due to the sanitary issues, but they hope to do it again next year. The shoes will be taken to a warehouse in Menomonee Falls on Dec. 15 to be cleaned and shipped.
