Resource Crucial Time for Students, Staff to Relax, Work, Reflect

Students and staff use Resource period in various ways, some prefer to use every last minute to work and give or ask for help, others like to socialize and hang out with friends, both views see Resource as an important aspect of the school day.

DECA advisor and teacher Garrett Sterken said, “Resource is essential.” Sterken uses Resource time to prepare lesson plans, reflect on his day, and assist students with class work.

As a club advisor, Sterken finds Resource period just as important. “Resource is essential for a competitive program, as many members have other activities such as jobs and stuff,” Sterken said. “It allows us to do what we need to during the school day, without Resource period, a school club like this one would become a burden on members and make it harder for members to learn and compete.”

Music classes utilize Resource period for one on one lessons with an instructor and a student. Senior Ben Einwalter said he is lucky because he has his during flex, however other students have their lessons during class time or other times. If those students so wish, they can take their lesson, or make up ones they missed, during Resource time.

Einwalter said, “I use [Resource] mainly for practicing. I make the best use of it as I can. I sign up for a practice room and I join in.” Einwalter said he uses Resource as practice time “every single day.”

Some students use Resource period to work, however other students use it to decompress and socialize. Sterken said he usually sees his students decompressing, usually on their phones or something else.

Senior Denis Murtezi usually uses Resource period to socialize with other students and relax. “Humans are social creatures,” Murtezi said. “They need to have social interaction to be [effective] student[s]. [Resource] is the perfect time to do that.” He finds this aspect of Resource period more important now due to COVID-19 making it harder for kids to hang out outside of school.

For Murtezi, he thinks it's easier to socialize at school and do his work at home. However Einwalter has the opposite viewpoint.

Einwalter wants Resource period to be lengthened. He said, “I make use of every single moment I can. I found the 45 minute [Resource period] a small crunch. It's only about 15 minutes [because of packing and getting to class].” Sterken agrees it should be longer as well.
