Starting high school is scary for most students. It can be overwhelming with the numerous amount of clubs and sports each school has to offer. With the large variety of clubs and sports, students can have a hard time choosing what to focus their time and effort on.

Students should join high school clubs because they can become better students. By joining clubs, students improve their leadership skills, cooperation skills, responsibility, time management, and social skills.

While students join clubs because it relates to their interests or for plain fun, they get a chance to better skills that will be beneficial to them throughout their life.

At HUHS, there are a variety of clubs offered for anyone interested in mechanics, farming, and all in between. Each of these clubs allows students to learn more about their interests and it gives them a way to showcase their enjoyment for the skill.

Clubs allow students to do something they enjoy and get valuable life skills out of it.

In the 2020-2021 season, HUHS offered 18 clubs and activities, and ten sports. In these extracurriculars, there were 384 students involved in clubs and 396 students involved in Fall sports.

School clubs provide students with experiences that teach them how to become better leaders and students.

According to the Princeton Review, having a well-rounded portfolio can improve competitiveness as a future college applicant, and extracurricular activities are the way to do this.

The Princeton Review said, “Your participation in clubs can hone your communication skills, foster creative thinking, and teach you how to work effectively with other people, and it is one of the few ways that colleges can gain insights into your personality.”

High school clubs are often advised by teachers and staff members, which makes them a good person to get letters of recommendation from for college.

Clubs are a common way for students to express themselves. The 2014 United States Census Bureau reported that six out of 10 students, ages 7-17, participated in school clubs, or 56 percent. The Census Bureau mentioned that students involved in clubs were more likely to be involved in their school and more likely to succeed in college.

Sports often place extra stress on students as they might be expected to be good.

According to Men, Mental Health and Elite Sport: a Narrative Review, by Gary Souter, “The physical and psychological demands placed upon them by the sporting environment may [make athletes more likely to] develop depression.”

Souter believes that sports can lead high school student-athletes to many mental health issues, such as eating disorders, anxiety, overtraining syndrome, which leads to depression, and many more all because of the stress that can be placed on a student-athlete.

Stress is not something that comes along with high school clubs because clubs are meant to be a fun way to express their interests and find other people with common interests.

High school clubs are a good way for students to improve skills that will eventually lead them to succeed in their life, without added stress.
