Pop artist Taylor Swift released a new album just about four and a half months after releasing her eighth album Folklore, both of which were quietly released during quarantine. The new album Evermore was released on Dec. 11, and includes songs similar to the ones featured in Folklore.

Evermore features 15 songs by Swift, three of these songs being collaborations. The title track “Evermore” features indie folk band Bon Iver. The song “Evermore” can be compared to the song “Exile” from Folklore, which also features Bon Iver. Other bands and artists Swift collabed with on the album include Haim on “No Body, No Crime”, and The National on “Coney Island.”

The song Evermore describes Swift’s pain as a pain that is evermore, thus the title. In the beginning of the song, the lyrics are quite down and negative as she describes pain she feels on a constant basis. Near the end of the song, the lyrics switch to a more positive note as she says “I had a feeling so peculiar this pain wouldn’t be evermore.”

All of the songs on the album share the same tone as the songs on Folklore. However, both albums have a different tone than Swift’s usual music. Swift is considered a pop singer, but Folklore and Evermore are labeled as alternative/indie albums.

Evermore is arguably Swift’s best album yet. The songs have a relatable meaning that fans enjoy listening to. It is also one of Swift’s bravest releases. Being a pop artist, there was a possibility of backlash with releasing an alternative album, let alone two. This proves that Swift wrote these songs for herself, which makes the album even more authentic. Evermore is more than worth the listen for these reasons.

Fans have expressed their excitement for Swift’s new album online since the release. The album received 7.268 million streams on the day of its release on Spotify. Folklore is currently number eleven on the Billboard top 200 charts and Evermore currently tops the Official Chart Update.
